Trim and Gutters for Steel Buildings
Use of trim and gutters for your steel building is an important option to consider before beginning your steel building project.
Trim is important as it covers and connects transitional areas of any steel building. Eave trim is the buffer between the steel building roof and sidewalls. Rake trim is the connector between the roof and the end-walls. Trim helps to seal all the transitional areas and also be resilient to the elements. Trim, and the trim color that you select is also important to the aesthetics of your steel building.
Well designed and quality trim along with proper installation will give your steel building an expensive looking and finished appearance.
Before considering any steel building company to provide the trim for your structure make sure that their trim offerings are not just generic pieces that necessitate field modification in order to fit to your building. The installation of this type of trim is difficult and does nothing to help the inherent durability of the building and detracts from its appearance. Make sure that your steel building manufacturer or supplier can provide a trim package that will be designed and fabricated specifically for the dimensions of your building. Verify that your trim ends will not be cut to a sharp straight edge but rather are hemmed (folded back) during fabrication.
One option to look into with the steel building company you are looking to order from is that of jamb flashing. This is extra trim that covers the jamb and header on any framed opening. The use of jamb flashing can greatly enhance the look of your steel building.
Gutters and downspouts are usually seen as options for steel buildings but for many designs and weather considerations they are almost a requirement for a fully functional building. Gutters greatly enhance the look of any building and are highly recommended for drainage functions except in the most heaviest of snowfall regions. Gutters and downspouts are critical to control roof runoff. This is important to consider in order to keep water and mud from splashing against the outside walls of your building, making it very unsightly.
Proper connection of the gutters at the corner of your building is imperative. Make sure that the manufacturer or supplier can provide factory-mitered rake and gutter trim. This will ensure quality connections and a professional finished look.
You may want to consider ridge caps for your roof to cover the peak of the building and connect the roof panels on either side. Try to stay away from ridge rolls in lieu of ridge caps as these need to bent into place and sealed. This is very difficult and the closures can deteriorate and form unsightly gaps. Ridge caps fit snugly to the pitch and profile of your roof to protect against leaks.
